SYMBIAN

 

Introduction

 

This is the creators and developers of what we all know Symbian operating systems for mobile phones which are now under the category of world’s leading company in the task it performs.

Located in the middle of London city, U.K. , it is the software license company which provides the trusted and advance supply of standard operating system, called: The Symbian OS, for data enabled mobile phones.

 

History of establishment

 

On 24 June 1998, Symbian Ltd. was formed as a partnership between Ericsson, Nokia Motorola and Psion. Symbian was previously owned by Nokia (56.3%), Ericsson (15.6%), Sony (13.1%), and Panasonic (10.5%) and Samsung (4.5%). Ten years to the day later, on 2008, Nokia announced that they intended to acquire all shares that they did not already own. The acquisition was of €264 million, or $410 million.

On June 24, 2008, Symbian foundation was announced with the aim to "provide royalty-free software and accelerate innovation”

 

Symbian Operating System

 

A operating system, specially designed for mobile devices, includes different user interface tools which are designed by Symbian ltd. It is a descendant of Psion’s EPOC and runs exclusively on ARM Processors.

All operating systems launched by Symbian:

1. Psion

    Founded by David Potter in 1980

 

2. EPOC16

Also known as SIBO launched in 1991 and lasted till 1998.

 

3. Symbian OS V6.0 and 6.1

It included the first Symbian operating phone, Nokia 9210 communicator, and was released in June 2001.It supported Bluetooth.

 

4. Symbian OS v7.0 and 7.0s

This version of Symbian OS was supported by all mobile companies, right from Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Motorola and many more. Symbian OS 7.0s was a version of 7.0 special adapted to have greater backwards compatibility with Symbian OS 6.x, partly for compatibility between the Communicator 9500 and its predecessor the Communicator 9210

 

5 Symbian OS v9.5

Announced in March 2007, it provides the concept of demand paging which is available from v9.3 onwards. Applications should launch up to 75% faster. Native support for mobile digital television broadcasts in DVB-H and ISDB-T formats and also location services. Additionally, SQL support is provided by SQLite. Not currently on any device in the user market. As of Q2 2008, OS 9.3 has just entered new devices.

 

Universality of the software

 

The software supports a wide range of application ranging from GPRS, to Bluetooth, to java and pc synchronization.

 

World’s first phone supported By Symbian

 

The first mobile phone supported by Symbian was the Nokia 9210, a communicator phone launched in 2001.more than a billion of phones supported by Symbian are reached and used throughout the world last year, i.e. 2007, including millions of smarphones.

 

The near expected future

Through the demand of the smartphone and Symbian OS included, in the near future, most of the phone will have the GPS inbuilt and will help in the Location based search type, example, and “camera with GPS”.
